2169 March 15, 1926 - March 29, 2021

Clair Patricia O'Sullivan Lisker, a pioneering figure in nursing education and the Kaiser Permanente health care system, died March 29 at age 95. She passed away at the Kaiser Oakland Medical Center, where she had dedicated most of her 43-year career as a nursing educator and executive. A strong proponent of managed, prepaid health care, Clair believed nurses and others should be critical thinkers who treat every patient with kindness and compassion.

Clair's journey began in Kilfinane, County Limerick, Ireland, where she was born to Robert and Nora O'Sullivan. She pointed to "The Chemical History of a Candle," by Michael Faraday, as an inspiration for her interest in the sciences. Eager to expand her horizons, Clair was just 17 when she left Ireland to study nursing at London's Royal Northern Hospital.

It was the height of World War II and Clair sheltered in the Underground during Nazi bombing raids. Moving to California in 1947, she joined the second class of students at the Kaiser Foundation School of Nursing in Oakland, and almost immediately became an instructor after graduating. She earned her B.S.N. and M.S. at San Francisco State University and UCSF, respectively. She went on to become associate director at the nursing school until its closure in 1976.

From 1976 until her retirement in 1991, Clair served as assistant and chief executive nurse at the Oakland hospital. Throughout her career, she held students and nurses alike to the highest standards while teaching through example. In retirement, she remained active in the nursing school's alumni association and efforts to create a new nursing school at Kaiser Permanente. Her story is documented by The Bancroft Library's Oral History Center.

A longtime Berkeley resident, Clair was a pint-sized woman and a force of nature. She was renowned for her delicious cooking and peppery political opinions. Dinner guests were typically treated to four-course meals culminating with one (or more) of Clair's signature desserts. She regularly knit elaborate sweaters for her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other youngsters.

Clair was a gifted seamstress, enthusiastic gardener, avid reader, and dog whisperer. She celebrated the election of President Barack Obama and the defeat of Donald Trump. She was endlessly curious about life.

Clair was preceded in death in 2011 by Fred M. Lisker, her husband of 58 years; and her siblings, Martha Horne of Kensington, Thomas of Cork, and Noel of Kilfinane. Survivors include her children, Wesley (Abby) and Susan Patmont (Jim); grandchildren, Oriana Bosin (Zach), Jeffrey Patmont (Zizi), Emily Lisker (Curtis Hayden), Danny Patmont (Katy Galambos), Stevie Patmont (Alyse Terschuren), and Sarah Lisker (Nick James); and great-grandchildren, Claire, Jamie, and Jack Patmont and Griffin and Cameron Bosin; and many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her entire extended family and a wide network of adoring friends, neighbors, and colleagues.

Special thanks to Abbie Habtegeorgis and Dr. Mary Patton for taking exceptional care of Clair in her later years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kaiser Foundation School of Nursing Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, 2372 Westcliffe Lane, Walnut Creek, CA 94597.

2184 MARK VANN, 39, BANJO PLAYER FOR GROUP LEFTOVER SALMON
Colorado's music community is mourning the loss of Mark Vann. The affable 39-year-old banjoist and co-founder of Boulder-based Leftover Salmon died Monday at his home. He had been diagnosed in October with melanoma, a form of skin cancer.

''Mark Vann was a wonderful guy and a brilliant musician. He took the banjo to a new level,'' said Chuck Morris, vice president of Clear Channel Entertainment in Denver. Morris was Leftover Salmon's manager for five years.

Craig Ferguson, director and owner of the annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival, called Vann ''the best rock 'n' roll banjo player ever. He was a kind, mild-mannered guy who really appreciated music.''

Vann started playing banjo as a teen-ager in Virginia. Leftover Salmon was formed 12 years ago in Boulder when Vince Herman of the Cajun-influenced Salmonheads joined up with Drew Emmitt and Vann of the progressive bluegrass Left Hand String Band. Vann twice won the banjo competition at Telluride.

Through relentless touring, the band earned a national audience for its free-form, self-described ''polyethnic Cajun slamgrass'' music.

One of the best examples of Vann's fusion style can be heard on the song Funky Mountain Fogdown on the 1997 CD Euphoria (Hollywood). On Leftover Salmon's The Nashville Sessions (Hollywood), Vann jammed with diverse musicians including Blues Traveler's John Popper, Sam Bush, bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs and the late Waylon Jennings.

''He was a great banjo player and a great musician. He could play (Earl) Scruggs-style bluegrass banjo, but he was his own player. He had his own style,'' said Grammy-winning mandolinist Sam Bush.

''He had that drive and intensity you can't teach. He was also one of the fastest pickers I ever tried to keep up with.''

In a series of local benefit concerts in November, Leftover Salmon was joined by a host of musical luminaries, including Todd Park Mohr, banjoists Bela Fleck and Pete Wernick and members of Colorado's other jamgrass bands: String Cheese Incident and the Yonder Mountain String Band.

Private services will be held this week. A memorial concert is being planned for the spring. Vann is survived by his wife, Jennifer Vann, of Boulder. A fund has been established to help pay Vann's medical expenses.

2187 Marlee Anne Kalmin was born January 12, 1993. She is survived by her Mother Pamela Gilbert, father Fred Kalmin, stepfather Matthew, and brother Joey Kalmin. Marlee was such a beautiful girl, her family saw her as an angel, a blessing. She was the light of her family's eyes, she brought so much love to everyone she met. Marlee "sparkled" as her family would say. She was always excited, and a very bubbly little girl. Marlee passed away from a tragic accident. "My whole world stopped in that instant." - Marlee's dad She was 23 months old. She is missed so much everyday by her family and friends. If tears could build a stairway, and memories a lane. I would walk right up to Heaven and bring you back again. No farewell words were spoken, No time to say "Goodbye". You were gone before I knew it, and only God knows why. My heart still aches with sadness, and secret tears still flow. What it meant to love you - No one can ever know. But now I know you want me to mourn for you no more; To remember all the happy times life still has much in store. Since you'll never be forgotten, I pledge to you today~ A hollowed place within my heart is where you'll always stay. Marlee is greatly loved and missed every single day, she will never be forgotten Rest in eternal peace Marlee.
