Deceased Name: DIRECTOR, ACTING TEACHER BYRNE PIVEN , FATHER OF JEREMY
Byrne Piven , an actor, director and teacher who influenced generations of performers, including his son, TV and movie actor Jeremy Piven , has died. He was 72.
Piven died of lung cancer in St. Francis Hospital of Evanston.
During its 30 years, the Piven Theatre Workshop in Evanston, a Chicago suburb, has shaped the work of stage and film actors including John, Joan and Ann Cusack; Lili Taylor; Aidan Quinn; and the Pivens' two children, Shira and Jeremy.
Jeremy Piven appeared in the TV series Ellen and later starred in another ABC series, Cupid. His father guest-starred on one episode of Cupid in 1998, playing a psychiatrist.
The younger Piven also has appeared in a number of films, including Grosse Pointe Blank, Just Write and Black Hawk Down.
Byrne Piven 's widow, Joyce Piven , said her husband had been playing in King Lear at their theater in Evanston last summer in a production directed by their daughter. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in November, she said.
Born in Scranton, Pa., Piven first went to work as an actor in New York, but moved to Chicago in 1954.
He and his wife married that year. They left Chicago the following year to work and study in New York, then returned to Chicago in 1967 and appeared in the short-lived Second City Repertory company. The couple later set up their acting workshop in Evanston.
''I came to Chicago to escape the show-biz scene in New York and to become a real legitimate actor,'' Piven once said.

Deceased Name: SELMA NATHANSON, RETIRED CLOTHING STORE OWNER
Every Christmas, members of the Optimist Club in Hollywood would take orphans to the Betsy and Billy Children's Department Store in downtown Hollywood. They'd leave with new clothes for the children.
Selma and Albert Nathanson, the store's owners, just wanted to help.
"Her character and personality inspired not only her children, but the community," Rabbi David Shapiro said of Selma Nathanson, who died Tuesday of a heart attack. She was 77.
Selma Rena Nathanson and her husband moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1939 from their hometown of Elizabeth, N.J., and opened Vogue Gifts, an accessory store at 202 S. Andrews Ave., said Betsy Rappaport, the Nathansons' daughter. When World War II broke out, they moved to Brooklyn, where Albert Nathanson got a job in the defense industry.
In 1947, they returned to Fort Lauderdale, where Albert worked with his father, building houses, Rappaport said. The following year, they moved to Hollywood and opened the children's store. They also became pioneer members of Temple Sinai in Hollywood, Shapiro said.
The Nathansons sold their store and their Hollywood house and moved to Plantation a couple of years ago.
One of Selma Nathanson's loves was orchids. She grew many orchids and other plants in her back yard, using the orchids to decorate the house at her children's weddings, Rappaport said.
Nathanson's needlework, pillows and crocheted handicrafts filled the house, she said.
"She could do anything," Rappaport said.
Besides her daughter, who lives in Dunwoody, Ga., Nathanson is survived by her husband, Albert; a son, Bill, of Plantation; two sisters, Ruth Scherman and Irma Walfish of Hollywood; a brother, Herbert Weinstein, of Hollywood; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

2390 Milton A. Rozen, 83, died Tuesday, November 9, 2004, in Hollywood, Florida. He was predeceased by his parents, Anna and Leo Rozen; one sister, Minnie Gordon; one brother, Irving R. Rozen. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Lillian B. Rozen, Hollywood, Fla.; two daughters, Pamela Gray and her husband, David Dunster, Binghamton, Barbara Hoffman and Dr. Jack Wolfsdorf, Miami, Fla.; one son, Wayne Rozen and his wife, Karen, Binghamton; seven grandchildren, Maggie and Geoffrey Gray, Jonathan and Joshua Hoffman, Brett Rozen, Dr. Todd and Debra Rozen, Lena Shabus; one brother and sister-in-law, Melvin and Barbara Rozen; one sister, Shirley Davis; also many nieces, nephews and cousins. Milt Rozen loved his family, his friends, his pets, and his work. Starting his own business in 1940, Indian Valley Industries, he built a diversified company that endures over 64 years later. Although his love of work and accomplishment dominated his interest, he participated in civil pursuits as President of the Town of Binghamton Planning Board, an active volunteer fireman in the Town of Binghamton, a member of the Classic Car Club of American and as a collector of antique gasoline engines. He was a horseback rider, owned purebred cattle, had numerous dogs and was very interested in the Humane Society and Project Paw. A lifelong member of Temple Israel, Milt Rozen valued his Jewish Heritage and helped instill those pursuits in his children and grandchildren, always spicing up family events with Yiddish storytelling. He was a Mason, pastmaster of Philetus Lodge #1023 and a Shriner. But it was his work and his love of building things that helped define his remembrance. He built the Inssbruck USA ski resort in 1964, purchased the Conklin Warehouse in 1973, started a paper recycling business the next year and relocated the corporate base to Johnson City in 1983. A stroke prematurely curtailed his business pursuits and active physical life in 1994 and his health seriously declined during the past six months. Those who knew him will always recall his quick wit and wide smile. Perhaps his humor and drive are the enduring gifts he leaves to all who shared his life. Burial will be in Temple Israel Cemetery, Conklin. Rozen, Milton Arthur (I19725)

2398 Minnie Ruth Hirsch (nee Eisenkramer), age 88, was born May 16, 1918, the last of 6 children (Martha, Ninon, David, Hubert, Jack), and died on April 11, 2007. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother.

During her early years and until her marriage to Max A. Hirsch (deceased) of Marvell, AR, she was a buyer and seller of women's apparel at Eisenkramer's department store in Pine Bluff.

Her early accomplishments included winning a state typing championship in 1935 for typing 83 wpm, playing piano and organ at Temple Anshe Emeth in Pine Bluff, AR, and being an active member of the Business and Professional Women's organization.

After her husband died in 1979, she continued managing their farm and her investments, living independently in the country until her illness. She became ill on January 26, 2007, while traveling to Chicago to attend a memorial service for her daughter, Maxine Hirsch Meyers, who died on November 12, 2006, after battling breast cancer for 18 years.

Minnie Ruth was known for her astute accounting and stock market skills and her acerbic wit. She enjoyed being a Marvell girls softball team organizer, the manager of its concession stand, a Brownie Scout leader for her daughters, and a rhythm band leader at her daughters' school. People approached Minnie Ruth to serve as pianist, to join them in bridge or Mahjong, and to get knitting advice. For years she played piano for Temple Beth El in Helena where she was a member. She joined Temple B'nai Israel in Little Rock in 2006, after Temple Beth El was deconsecrated.

Her favorite saying was, "I do just like AETN says to do, 'Be Curious.", She will be remembered as a gentle mother and grandmother who gave only unconditional love, a person who found great joy in giving to others and yet one who found an endearing way to 'tell it like it is.'

Survivors include her daughter Martha Lou Alman (Charles) and granddaughters Laney and Susan Alman (Little Rock); grandson Max Meyers (Chicago); son-in-law Dennis Meyers (Chicago); sister-in-law Rosalie Eisenkramer (Hot Springs); nephews and nieces Bill (Kathryn) Eisenkramer (Hot Springs), David (Suzanne) Franklin (Memphis, TN) and Sylvia (Larry) Fox (Tucson, AZ).
