2577 Newsday (Melville, NY) - Sunday, November 13, 2005
Deceased Name: LONG ISLAND Lloyd Tennenbaum, 80, rabbi, social activist
Raphael Tennenbaum was only 4 or 5, but he remembers the week his father didn't come home from a trip down South, a week when the mail piled up at his family's home in Huntington.
It was 1962, and Tennenbaum's father, Rabbi Lloyd Tennenbaum, had been arrested in a civil rights march with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Albany, Ga. "I was in some ways alarmed, but in other ways I knew that he had done something that we were proud of," his son said.
Lloyd Tennenbaum, a former resident of Huntington, was known as a fiery preacher and loving father who had a lifelong commitment to social activism. He died Nov. 4 at a nursing home in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, where he had lived for the past two years. The cause was complications from Alzheimer's. He was 80.
"He came from a long tradition of standing up for oppressed people," said Raphael Tennenbaum, a writer who lives in Brooklyn.
Lloyd Tennenbaum was born in Rochester in 1925. He graduated from Yeshiva University in 1946 and attended graduate school at Columbia University, where he met his future wife. In 1950 he graduated from the Jewish Theological Seminary. He headed congregations in Plainfield, N.J., and Lynchburg, Va., before the family moved to Huntington and he took the pulpit at the Huntington Jewish Center in 1962.
In 1969, Rabbi Tennenbaum founded Kehillath Shalom Synagogue in Cold Spring Harbor, a reconstructionist congregation. He led the synagogue until he retired in 1977 and then moved to Manhattan. In 1978, his then-wife, Silvia Tennenbaum, published a novel titled "Rachel, the Rabbi's Wife," based in part on her own experiences. The couple divorced after 30 years of marriage but retained a close connection.
He is survived by his ex-wife, Silvia Tennenbaum of East Hampton; sons Jeremy of Saratoga, Calif., David of Chicago, and Raphael of Brooklyn; and two granddaughters.
Tennenbaum, Rabbi Lloyd (I17930)

2578 Newton, MA: Formerly of Rochester entered into rest on April 2, 2013. Daughter of Albert and Shirley Aroesty (Dunn) predeceased by her beloved brother Elliot Aroesty and sister Ruth Aroesty Levenson. Survived by her loving children Devorah Aroesty-Cohen, Eli Aroesty-Cohen and his wife Rena Luger, and Adam Aroesty-Cohen; by her uncles and aunts, Prof. Arnold & Dr. Doris Dunn, Bridgett Aroesty, Belle & Charles Broutman and Lorraine & Sidney Bolkosky. Also survived by beloved nephews Jake, Donny and Noah Levenson and devoted brother-in-law Jon Levenson and his wife, Beverly Levenson and their son and daughter-in-law, Avi and Natanielle Cooper. Aroesty, Hannah Beth (I12996)

2583 NIGHTINGALE--William L., born April 17, 1931, passed suddenly October 6th after celebrating his 70th high school reunion with classmates in New York City. Bill will be fondly remembered for his enthusiasm, quick wit and generous spirit. A resident of The Osborn in Rye, he leaves behind his beloved wife Nancy Bomeisler Nightingale, to whom he was married for 65 years; his daughters, Vicki Nightingale and Jill Burstein (Dan), whom he cherished, and his grandchildren, Katherine McGinn (Trevor), Alison Burstein and Samuel Hettich, of whom he was immensely proud. He is survived by his brother, Dr. Stuart Nightingale (Elena) and sisters, Alice Gross (Elliot) and Susan Nettler (Paul). A devoted alumnus of both Horace Mann '49 and Yale University '53. He was a class leader for AYA and treasurer of his Yale class for over 50 years. He served a term on the Board of Governors at Yale. He thrived on making connections between people and companies, whether mentoring Yale graduates in his advertising agencies, or creating a debate program for Yale/Princeton students to mentor high school debaters with the Yale Westchester Alumni Association. A talented cartoonist, he illustrated for The Yale Daily News and The Fort Dix Newspaper, while serving in the United States Army. His own vast collection of books on comic illustrators was gifted to the permanent collection of the Beinecke Library at Yale, one of his many charitable contributions to the University. Bill was a founder of several boutique advertising agencies. He was a business innovator, founding the first modular advertising agency and pioneering the concept of profit-sharing agency/client partnerships. At CasonNightingale, which he headed for 29 years, he nurtured the careers of several generations of Yale students, many in their first hired positions. Nightingale, William Lester (I5337)

2589 Norbert Weinberg was only 12 years old when he lived through one of the most terrifying moments for Jews in Europe - Kristallnacht.

The Great Neck resident often recalled how Nazi soldiers came to his school in Germany on Nov. 9, 1938, threw all the Hebrew books in a pile and set them on fire. The Nazis then instructed the students to pack their belongings and return to their hometowns.

Throughout Germany, thousands of Jews were arrested and sent to concentration camps, nearly 100 were killed, hundreds of synagogues were destroyed, and thousands of Jewish-owned businesses and homes were ransacked. It was the prelude to Hitler's Holocaust.

In recent years, Weinberg often recounted the experience for Hebrew school students at Temple Israel of Great Neck, where he was a member.

Weinberg "never forgot his roots," said his son, Jeffrey Weinberg, a deputy sports editor at Newsday. "He wanted future generations to be aware of what happened."

Norbert Weinberg, 82, died on Wednesday of complications from lung cancer.

He was born in 1926 in Lauterbach, a German town of about 6,000 people about 460 miles southwest of Berlin. Only about 150 of them were Jewish. Until he was 11, he went to school with the general German population until it was decreed Jewish children could no longer attend German schools.

So he started attending an all-Jewish school in the town of Bad Nauheim, about 60 miles away.

Then came Kristallnacht - the Night of Broken Glass.

He often recalled that when he returned to Lauterbach, he went by a synagogue burned down by the Nazis. He and a friend went inside to search for religious articles. They found none - but Weinberg did get a stern lecture from his mother, who was worried about him endangering himself.

Less than a year later, in July 1939, his family gained a visa to come to the United States by boat. He arrived at the age of 13, just a few months before World War II broke out.

He and his parents moved to Washington Heights in Manhattan, which had a large German-Jewish population. Weinberg entered the public school system, speaking almost no English. He learned much of his English listening to Red Barber's radio broadcasts of Brooklyn Dodgers games, and became a lifelong fan.

At 18, he enlisted in the Navy. He served in the Pacific from 1944-46 as a naval engineer and was a decorated veteran.

Under the GI Bill, he studied electrical engineering at City College of New York and eventually went to work for Nassau County in the public works department's Division of Buildings. He served as chief electrical engineer for the county and was involved in building the Nassau Coliseum and expanding Nassau Community College and Nassau University Medical Center. He retired in 1992 after 27 years.

Weinberg was divorced from his first wife, Ellen Haas, and married Effie Apelast in 1992. Besides Apelast and his son Jeffrey, and his wife, Judy, Weinberg is survived by another son, Stanley, of Flushing, and two grandsons, Matthew and Benjamin.
