    • Oldest Canadian Jewish woman Dora Shiff dies at age of 108

Dora Shiff, believed to be the oldest Jewish woman in Canada, died recently at the age of 108. That was her official age, but family members think she may have been two years older.

Shiff had been a patient at Maimonides Hospital Geriatric Centre for four years. Prior to that she had lived on her own; her husband, Solomon Shiff, died in 1949.

According to her son Sam, longevity runs in the family. One of Mrs. Shiff's grandmothers lived to be 112.

She had no formula for attaining a ripe old age, Sam said, but she ate sparingly and never touched red meat. She swore by tea and sugar. "She was really a very frail little woman," said Sam.

Rabbi Charles Bender, who delivered he euology [sic] and was a friend of many years, said Mrs. Shiff was identified with "every worthy cause, particularly those related to Jewish education...and was very interested in everything Jewish." She was very devout and rarely missed services at Adath Israel Congregation.

Shiff, nee Dunsky, came to Canada in 1914 from the little Polish town of Yashinovka and raised five children. Besides Sam she is survived by her other son Harry and daughters Clara (Mrs. M. Baker) and Jean (Mrs. B. Cohen), of Boston. Another son Louis predeceased her. Mrs. Shiff was a great-great-grandmother.

During her life she also looked after many other people. "Anybody who came to her door never walked away empty handed," said Sam.

But she was no pushover. As Bender recalled, "she was very forthright and honest in her opinions" and she remained mentally sharp almost until the end of her life.
