Gustave L. Levinson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, died on June 13, 2009, in Rockville, Maryland.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 9, 1915, he moved with his family to Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School in 1932. He earned a bachelor's degree in Business Engineering from Carnegie Institute of Technology. During World War II, Gus served in Tunisia, Algeria, and other parts of North Africa, Italy, and England as a member of the U.S. Army Air Forces. He retired as a Lt. Colonel from the Air Force Reserves after thirty years of service. Following the war he joined his father, Sol, in operating Levinson's Department Store in Cuyahoga Falls, ultimately converting it to Levinson's Uniforms which continues in business today under new ownership. He was known among customers throughout northeastern Ohio for his honesty, integrity, and superior customer service.
In 1946 he met Lydia Gruber, from Columbus, Ohio. They were married on October 12, 1947, and set up their home in Akron. Gus and Lydia celebrated their sixty-first wedding anniversary in October 2008. Gus was an avid fan of new technologies, investing in one of the first computers available for small businesses. He designed and built a uniquely contemporary home in Akron in the early 1950s which included some of the latest hi-tech features available at the time.
Despite the challenges of living with Parkinson's disease for over 25 years, Gus pursued a wide range of interests, including politics, science and technology, military history, and finance. He also loved to travel and took several vacations with his children and their families, including trips throughout the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Europe, Israel, and Egypt.
At the age of 92, Gus moved with Lydia to the Washington D.C. area, where several of their daughters live. This enabled him to fulfill his long-time desire to enjoy the cultural attractions the capital area had to offer.
Gus is survived by his wife, Lydia; his brother, Harold; sisters, Trudy Loeb (Bill), Jeanette and Bette; his daughters Sande Brecher (Mitchell "Rick"), Judy (Bill Rogers), Laurie (Mike Kukura), and Pam (Dana Bowden). He was preceded in death by his grandson, Reid Brecher; and has seven other grandchildren, Todd and Jordan Brecher, Andrew Levinson, Sarah, Emily, and Melanie Kukura and Solon Bowden.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, Beth El Section 11
