Notes |
- Antin, Wallace, WWII Bomber Pilot, So. Fla. developer, writer, big game fisherman, inventor, husband, father, and grandfather. Wallace M. Antin born July 21, 1922 to Sarah and David Antin, died peacefully on October 20, after a short struggle with Lymphoma. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nicole, his son Mark Antin (wife Sarah), daughter Jane Mazzarella (husband John); and his grandchildren Jesse Antin (wife Lindsey), Cali Mazzarella, Judd Antin (wife Tamar), and Dara Mazzarella. First Lt. Wallace Antin served his country in 1944-45 as a pilot-in-command of a B-24 bomber based in Italy where his targets were enemy oil fields and rail yards. After his tour of duty in Europe, Wallace was considered for a position as a pilot for presidential aircraft, but he declined that honor, preferring instead to return home to New York. In 1947, Wallace covertly recruited pilots and acquired arms for the future Israeli Air Force. Following his return to NY, Wallace met Nicole Rothenberg, a young concert harpist and 6 mos later, they were married. He then briefly joined his father David in the dress manufacturing business before pursuing an opportunity in residential construction, first in Scarsdale, NY, but for the majority of his career, in So. Fla. During the next 30 yrs., he enjoyed the successes and overcame the challenges of an unpredictable real estate market. Wallace's years a developer produced many single and multi family homes. But he was most proud of the 16 story Corinthian on Collins Ave. Nicole worked side-by-side on these projects, in concept design, sales, and interior decorating. Success in the business allowed them to travel widely and fish avidly in the Atlantic waters off So. Fla. (where his ashes will be strewn) and the Bahamas. Retirement from the construction industry did not slow or addle Wallace's mind. In the ensuing 25 yrs, he was awarded a contract with the City of NY for the construction of floating prisons to alleviate overcrowding there. He nearly finished a novel about a private military air force which daughter Jane hopes to complete. He developed ideas for recovering energy from moving vehicles and moving ships and converting it into electric power. He researched deeply and spoke out passionately about the relationship between multinational oil companies and our dependence on foreign oil. He came to accept the correctness and inevitability of a two state solution between Israel and Palestine. He was a voracious reader of fiction and a lover of music, especially classical. It is no less true because it is often said - he first and foremost loved his wife, his children, their spouses, his grandchildren, and their spouses - they are the legacy of which he was most proud.
