- Burton A. Marks, a well-known criminal defense attorney who in a 30-year-career appealed and won many personal rights cases, has died of a heart attack.
He was 57 when he died May 13 in St. John's Hospital, Santa Monica. He had a history of heart illness.
Marks, a graduate of UCLA Law School, was admitted to the state Bar in 1956 and over the years had been president of the Criminal Courts Bar Assn. and chairman of the County Bar Assn.'s criminal justice section.
With Gerald Goldfarb, he was a co-author in 1980 of "Winning With Your Lawyer," a book designed to acquaint lay readers with the legal system.
Survivors include his wife, Marlene, and three children.
