  Elizabeth Rosenthal was born in Bucharest, and she and Karl always spo ke to each other in German. Before World War I, they always gave their na tionality as "Austrian", as Bukovina was part of Austria when the emigrat ed to the US in 1886. After World War I, however, due to extreme anti-German and Austrian sentiments in the US, th ey started claiming that they were "French." The first document that I fo und that shows this is the 1920 census.
