- Henri A. Meis, 95, of Danville, Ill., and Palm Springs, Calif., died at 11:20 a.m. PST, Monday (Jan. 31, 2005) at Palm Springs Health Care Center in Palm Springs.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at Spring Hill Mausoleum, 300 E. Voorhees St., Danville, with Rabbi Norman Klein officiating. Pape Memorial Home and Gardens, 10 E. Williams St., Danville, IL. 61832 is in charge of local arrangements. There will be no visitation and memorials may be made to Danville Area Community College, 2000 E. Main St., Danville, IL. 61832.
Henri was born July 3, 1909, in Danville to Alphonse and Blanche Pfeifer Meis. He attended Roselawn Grade School and Danville High School. He graduated from Lake Forest Academy in Lake Forest, Ill., in 1927. He graduated from Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania in 1931 with a bachelor's of science degree in economics. He served with the U.S. Army as a lieutenant colonel during World War II in several places like Washington, D.C., Tallahassee, Fla., and New York City.
Henri married Alma Lyon on Aug. 11, 1938, in Paris, France, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 5, 1989, as well as his son, Henri A. Meis, Jr., known as "Skippy", on April 12, 1988. Survivors include a daughter, Ellen (Lee) Metzendorf; grandchildren, Emily (David) Samuels and Edward (Beth) Metzendorf; great-grandchildren, Benjamin Samuels, Allyson Samuels and Kate Metzendorf, all of New York City; and a daughter-in-law, Gail Rosboro Meis Furrh (James Madison Furrh) of Elysian Fields, Texas.
Henri was president of Meis Bros. for several decades until the early 1960s. He was an involved member of the community, and his special interests were serving on the boards of Lake View Hospital and the Danville Chamber of Commerce. His memberships and activities included: Member of Temple Beth El, Member of the Danville Country Club, president of the Vermilion Parking, Inc. 1954-1965, president of the New Industries, Inc. 1956, president of Vermilion Investments, Inc., vice president of New Industries, Inc. 1958, and vice chairman and director of United Hospital Fund, Inc. 1956.
