      elvin Herman Farmelant, 89

      NAPLES, FL - Melvin Herman Farmelant, age 89, of Naples FL. and formerly of Worcester, MA passed away on November 5th, 2018 following a brief illness. Born April 5th, 1929 in Lynn, MA, to Morris and Lena (Rosenbaum) Farmelant, he was the younger of two children and a first generation American. A graduate of Roxbury Memorial High School in Boston, Mel earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Harvard University and a medical doctorate (M.D.) degree from Tufts University. He served in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant with the 60th Field Artillery Battalion of the 9th Infantry Division stationed in Heilbronn Germany. Mel later accepted a residency at Boston University Medical Center, where he specialized in the emerging practice of nuclear medicine. In 1968, he was appointed as Chief of the Nuclear Medicine Department at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester, a position he held for the next 30 years. During his professional career, Mel served as an Instructor at the School of Medicine at Boston University and co-authored several published research papers. A spiritual man, Mel was actively involved with Temple Sinai, a reform Jewish synagogue in Worcester, where he served as president of the congregation. During his tenure, Mel helped lead fundraising activities for a new house of worship that was consecrated in 1980. He also served as Master of Worcester's Masonic Temple Lodge. An avid golfer and reader, Mel enjoyed classical music and international affairs.

      He leaves wife Lynda Watts Farmelant of Naples, FL, sons Marshall J. of Worcester, MA, Stuart N. of Jersey City, NJ., Scott D. of Melrose, MA, and Matthew E. of Glendale, AZ, and sister Annabelle of New York, NY. Mel married Phyllis Gerber Farmelant following the tragic death of his wife, Phyllis Patricia Farmelant, and their loving devotion and caring spanned nearly 42 years. Mel is survived by his five grandchildren, Shayna R. Farmelant, Lily T. Farmelant, Maxwell M. Farmelant, Olivia K. Byer, and Maxwell L. Byer; daughters-in-law Alison M. Mills and Leah Beth Byer; 12 nieces and nephews; and their 25 children.

      A funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at 11 AM in the Priest Chapel at Lincoln Park Cemetery, Warwick, RI
