    • STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Former Staten Islander Jane Barbara Jacobson, 81, a longtime advocate for the disabled, died Wednesday in Keswick Nursing Home in Baltimore, where she had been a resident for the past two years.

      Born with cerebral palsy in Great Kills, Jane Rosenberg graduated from New Dorp High School and earned a bachelor's degree in sociology in 1955 from Wagner College, Grymes Hill. That same year, she married Edward Benjamin Jacobson, who also had cerebral palsy, and together they raised two children in Great Kills. In 1984, the couple moved to New Springville.

      In the 1960s, Mrs. Jacobson volunteered at the former Willowbrook State School and in the mid-1970s, she was a social worker at the International Center for the Disabled in Manhattan.

      She also volunteered for the Borough President's office and often attended meeting to advocate for the rights of the disabled.

      Her husband of 48 years, Edward, died in 2003.

      Mrs. Jacobson is survived by a son, Steven; a daughter, Lisa, and four grandchildren.
