Notes |
- Biographical Information Philip Pfeifer was born May 31, 1831, in Eberbach, Germany. He immigrated to the United States in 1849 at the age of 17 during a wave of German Jewish migration. First living in New York City, Pfeifer eventually moved to Louisville, Kentucky, sometime in the 1850's and then to Arkansas Post just before the outbreak of the Civil War. Pfeifer enlisted to fight for the Confederacy in Fort Smith on July 15, 1861. During his service he was involved in the Battle of Pea Ridge, among others. After the war, Pfeifer migrated to Little Rock where he was successful in several business pursuits, most notably as a grocer. Pfeifer was a prominent member of Little Rock's Jewish community and was elected the first vice-president of the earliest temple organized in the city and later, president. Pfeifer also served as a city alderman, a Little Rock school board member and on the first Board of Health. Philip Pfeifer died on July 27, 1897, and was survived by his wife, Clara, and eight children. A school later built on land donated by the Pfeifer family was named after him. I
