Charles Pollak, known as Carl, quit school at age 14 (1907) and got a j ob working as an errand boy to a salesman. He told people later in li fe "I went to The School of Hard Knocks." He then did business with Man ny Dannenberg, in the area of lace and veilings. He started working for K aye and Einstein Production Fur Comapany in 1918 at age 25. He was friend ly with Irwin Heilbroner who he worked for at the Kaye and Einstein compa ny and in 1920 married Irmin's cousin Fannie Heilbroner. In 1923 he boug ht Kaye and Einstein.
Alexander Pollak was born in 1921 and they lived on W 110th St. Th ey soon moved to W. 113th St. to a larger apartment. The summer of 1925 t hey rented a house in Pelham, and in September of 1925 moved to New Rochel le, NY. Ruth was born in 1925.
The fur business survived the depression, and was successful until WW 2. Charles invested his business profits in stock, and after the fur inve ntory was sold Kaye and Einstein remained as a stock holding company.
Fannie died in 1949, and Charles lived in apartment in New York Cit y. He also wintered in Hollywood Florida. He was an avid golf player a nd card player, and belonged to Hampshire Country Club in Larchmont. He e njoyed entertaining his growing family of 5 grandchildren there.
Later in life Charles married Gilda Deutsch. He enjoyed driving h is black cadillac and smoking cigars. Once in Florida, he was invit ed to be in an Eastern Airlines Jim Dooley commercial which featured him s aying "Come on Down."
