For 25 years, Kay (Boettcher) Brook worked as a social worker in Adams County School District #50, helping elementary age schoolchildren who had been abused or who suffered other adjustment difficulties. She was talented in creating unique effective education curriculum for use in the classroom to help children develop positive social problem solving skills. She created the character Jack, a puppet she used in the classroom; Jack had so many "problems" and through Kay's creativity, he was able to help children learn how to solve those problems. Kay brought true dedication to her work, spending countless hours of overtime in pursuit of helping others and developing her own curriculum which she then shared. Kay was born on a rural farm just within the city boundary of Cincinnati, Ohio. As a child, she had a pony which brought her great joy, and Kay continued to love rural places throughout her life. She met Bryan Dunn Brook in Cincinnati and married him in 1965, having her only child, Kerwin, the subsequent year. Kay first became an English teacher in Cincinnati before the family moved, eventually settling in Denver, Colorado. Kay and Bryan divorced in 1975, and Kay went back to school at the University of Louisville in order to pursue a Master's degree in Social Work. Upon obtaining her degree, Kay moved back to Colorado where she found work in SD50, a position she held until her retirement in 2003. Kay married Bud Boettcher in 1984, enjoying the off-road jeeping that he introduced her to. That marriage ended unhappily some 10 years later, but Kay found Bill Lorber and remarried in 2008, a relationship that brought her great happiness until his death in 2011. Kay converted from Presbyterianism to Reform Judaism in 1965. She studied Judaism passionately, first attending Temple Sinai and then Temple Emmanuel. Upon her retirement, Kay dedicated herself full-time to participation in Temple B'nai Torah with Rabbis Flatte, Cook, and Moskowitz, undergoing a Bat Mitzvah in 2004. Kay headed the temple's Mitzvah and Social Action Committee, offering her support to many people in need and working to bring attention to the issue of domestic violence within the Jewish community. Through her job, her temple participation, and her many charitable deeds, Kay devoted her life to helping others. Kay spoke for years of her early experience of familial abuse, yet she found the courage to transform her suffering into something positive, working to counter and end abuse as part of her daily job, and allowing her pain to facilitate empathetic connection with the children she worked with. Kay spoke openly of this abuse during her life, hence it seems appropriate to share this fact so that other abuse survivors might take hope in her strength. Kay was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2009, and died due to complications related to the disease. She is survived by her son, Kerwin, as well as by many dear friends including Roberta Allen, Martha Harvey, and Jenny Poland. She will be greatly missed.
