    • Susan Engel Levy, a former instructor, curator and art benefactor, died Friday of lung cancer at her home in New Jersey. She was 73.
      Mrs. Levy was born in New York City, and lived in New Orleans for 42 years before moving to Maplewood, N.J., a year ago. She attended Bryn Mawr and Barnard Colleges, graduated from Newcomb College with bachelor's and master's degrees in classical languages and was working toward her doctorate in history and classics at Tulane University.
      She taught at Newcomb College and Tulane University for 31 years, starting as a teaching assistant and later working as a part-time lecturer in the Department of Classical Studies, a visiting instructor in ancient history and an adjunct instructor in Greek and Roman art. She also was a researcher for the Louisiana State Museum in New Orleans, curator of education for the New Orleans Vatican Pavilion and a researcher, consultant, associate curator of education and exhibition curator for the New Orleans Museum of Art.
      She was a member of the board of trustees for WWNO radio station and the Hellenic Arts Society of New Orleans, board member of Save Our Cemeteries, member of the Newcomb College Art Advisory Board and trustee for the Archaeological Institute of America.
      She was president of the Archaeological Institute of America, New Orleans Society; co-chairman of the Pilgrimage of Prayer and Art tours of New Orleans churches; organizer and co-chairman of the Friends of St. Alphonsus Restoration Project; bequest chairman of Tulane Graduate School and a juror of the Arts Council of New Orleans.
      She was a member of the board of directors for the New Orleans School of Glass Works, local organizer and member of the board of directors for the Census of Stained Glass in America survey, and organizer and co-chairman of Tours of Stained Glass Art in Sacred Places for the Preservation Resource Center. She also was a patron of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, a Fellow for Life at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a benefactor for the New Orleans Museum of Art. She was a member of New York's Cosmopolitan Club.
      She published numerous articles, and her writing was frequently featured in the magazine Preservation in Print. Mrs. Levy donated paintings and sculptures to numerous museums, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Phoenix Museum of Art, Birmingham Museum of Art and Newark Museum of Art.
      Survivors include her husband, Richard W. Levy; two sons, Eric E. and Warren M. Levy, and a grandchild.
