Notes |
- Geraldine Nagel "Gerry" Westheimer, 90, passed away peacefully on the 24th of September 2008 of Alzheimer's disease and heart failure. She was predeceased by her parents, the late Morris and Corinne Nagel and her, sister, the late Naomi Bermond of Beverly Hills, California, and by her husband of 45 years, the late I. Mark Westheimer of Houston, Texas. She is survived by her two sons, Alan David and Donald Nagel Westheimer, and their respective wives, Ivis Harriman Westheimer and Cynthia Osborn Westheimer. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Michael N. Westheimer and wife, Diane Hakimi Westheimer, Rachel W. Vojvodic and husband, Adrian Vojvodic, Joshua M. Westheimer, Emily F. Westheimer, Rowan M. Westheimer, and step-grandchildren, Garth V. Phillips and wife, Kit Morris, and Gavin J. Rouleau and wife, Crystal Boese. Also surviving are two great grandchildren, Kathleen G. "Katie" and Evan.
Gerry was born and raised in New York City and moved with her family to Los Angeles, where she attended UCLA and then worked in her father's lady's ready-to-wear manufacturing business, Versatogs. In November 1941, she married I. Mark "Westy" Westheimer, an attorney and co-founder of the Houston law firm, Hirsch & Westheimer. She resided in Houston for the remainder of her life. A tireless worker, Gerry devoted herself to her family and to charitable pursuits, spending countless hours volunteering for the Sisterhood of Congregation Beth Israel, Texas Children's Hospital, The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research, The United Way of Greater Houston, Crisis Hotline, SEARCH, and, in her later years, The American Red Cross. Always the life of the party, Gerry made new friends everywhere she went. Many will remember her for her vivid sense of humor. She regularly had a joke to tell for the amusement of all. She will be sorely missed.
