- John Henle, 83, Sarasota, formerly of Columbus, Ohio, died July 31, 2008.
Born in New York City, Mr. Henle was a gifted graduate of Cornell University with an active and varied career in academia, government service, entrepreneurship, commerce and the arts. A longtime resident of Columbus, Ohio, Mr. Henle was vice president of the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce and held various leadership positions with Ohio's state and city arts councils. He also taught psychology at George Washington University, was director of rehabilitation at the Ohio Department of Health and was chief of the Ohio Division of Services for the Blind. Mr. Henle was strongly committed to social justice, equality and human rights. He worked on a variety of committees and organizations geared toward improving the lives of women, minorities, children and the mentally and physically challenged populations. Mr. Henle also coordinated political campaigns, produced a television series that earned a Peabody Award and spearheaded many significant programs, including an effort during the civil rights movement that was adopted as a national model for the peaceful integration of public schools. In 1960, the Columbus Citizen-Journal named Mr. Henle one of the "top 10 men of the year." Mr. Henle retired to Sarasota, Fla., and enjoyed many years traveling around the world. France was a favorite destination.
He is survived by loving friends, family members and his wife, Irene Henle.
