- Elizabeth "Betty" Mintz, the first woman elected to the City Council of Shaker Heights, died in Fla., on Jan. 4 at age 96.
Mrs. Mintz served on the council for 12 years. A professional volunteer, she was awarded the Hannah G. Solomon Award from National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW). She was a past president of NCJW, Cleveland Section and held leadership positions on the national and international levels of the organization. When Mrs. Mintz and her husband retired to Naples, Fla., they became founding members of Temple Shalom there. She helped establish the Naples chapter of NCJW and joined the Imperial Club.
Mrs. Mintz was a member of the Oakwood Club while living in Cleveland. She enjoyed golf, bridge and world travel. A member of the first confirmation class of The Temple-Tifereth Israel, she attended the University of Wisconsin and was a graduate of Flora Stone Mather College of Western Reserve University.
Mrs. Mintz was predeceased by her husband Alexander. She is survived by daughters Barbara Rosenblatt of Sterling, Va., and Karen Mintz Margulies of Aventura, Fla.; son Loren Mintz of Boca Raton, Fla.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sister Madge Abrams of Shaker Heights.
