    • Stanley Diamond Update - 03/13/2002

      See possible connection to Alvin SEGAL at end:

      Date of death from Family Who's Who which also lists Hebrew Names Yosef B en (Beniamin) Yohashua Halvah

      Aug. 19, 1995: Family Who's Who shows his name as PERETZEN with an 1841 bi rth year. That would have made him 13 years younger than his wif e. To be verified. It also lists him as JOSEPH U.

      ETHEL SPERBER BERZAN noted his name as JOSHUEL. BESSIE PEARSON YATES ref erred to her grandfather as JOSEPH and said his name was PERETZASON (PERET Z-A-SON) when he emigrated and that it was changed to PEARSON by an immigr ation official. She did not indicate where this official was. There a re many given names "PERETZ" in the Bialystok vital records.

      December 16, 1997, at the Shiva of Harry PEARSON, Stanley PEARSON recall ed the story of JOSHUEL having been detained in Glasgow, Scotland for t wo years due to illness (prior to first emigrating to Canada.) It was dur ing this time that the name was changed and where a record with the initi al "U" was created.

      Sept. 9, 1993: LORNE PEARSON heard about a book given to his father JA CK with the inscription JACOB PERETZ. If so, JACK's birth record may sh ow his given name as JANKIEL. LORNE mentioned that the only other memb er of the family to concur the family name was originally PERETZ was LIL K ERT. He also said "the others didn't know" - which is contradicted by BES SIE PEARSON YATES' comment above. LORNE was also told "all the Jewish PEA RSONS are related." See JACK PEARSON's file for information re BIALYSTOK .

      Sept. 10, 1993: Obituary for wife FAIGIE shows his initials as J.N. and ye ar of death 1914. An (ALLAN RAYMOND collection) photograph of JOSHUEL a nd FAIGIE in the November 17, 1983 Canadian Jewish News refers to th em as "UGH" and FAIGIE. Ask the source of the name UGH. (See above; m ay have come from Scotland.)

      LIL MILLMAN said BESSIE STREAN WolfSON had the passports for JOSEPH and FA YGIE. See (other) IMPORTANT details in FAYGIE COHEN (RUCHIS) file.

      January 1995: JOAN STREAN LAZARUS has fragmentary notes of her conversati on with her aunt BESSIE STREAN WolfSON made prior to her trip to Russ ia a few years ago. BESSIE also said the PEARSON name was PERETZ. In ad dition, BESSIE mentioned the following places: Grodno, Bialystok, Sislovit ch and Sohovolia.

      Sislovitch was formerly known as Sislevitch and now is Svisloch, Belaru s, 53º 02'/ 24º 06', just east of the Polish border and about 68 km E SE of Bialystok, Poland. In 1930 it had a Jewish population of 1959. Th ere are many research references for this town: Where Once We Walked (gaz etteer), a Yizkor Book and the Jewish Genealogical Family Finder (which h as the names of a number of families from the town being researched by Jew ish genealogists around the world).

      Sohovolia could be Sukhopol, Belarus [20 km WNW of Svisloch, Belarus ]) or the town now known as Suchowola, 56 km North of Bialystok and 18 k m, on a direct road, NNW of Janow. Janow is where my great grandmother D VORAH COHEN GONIONDZKI lived. DEVORAH was the sister of JOSHUEL PEARSON 's wife FAIGIE! The Jewish Genealogical Family Finder indicates there we re Yanofsky families in Suchowola;

      YANOFKSY / JANOWSKY is a toponymical name taken by families originally fr om Janow. As there were several towns with that name, it adds to the like lihood of YANOFKSY families not being related.

      Svisloch and Suchowola were located in the former Grodno Gubernia Provin ce / District) of the Russian Empire. Grodno was mentioned by BESSIE Wolf SON.

      The Family Who's Who indicates his name was Yosel (and in another place JO SEPH U. PEARSON (PERETZEN). Check this spelling with LORNE PEARSON.

      Dear Stan,
      Charlie Wolfson has not been well. Hope to try to make a visit soon re t he possibility of a passport in the names of Faigie and Yossef Pearson. M eanwhile I had a conversation with Lois Vosburg, daughter of Hymie Pears on who enlightened me with a few tidbits. Faigie and Yossef - parents of R achel Strean left Bialystok, she thinks, to come to Canada. En route Yoss ef got pneumonia and had to stop in Scotland to recover. Yossef was renam ed Hugh in Scotland which, on entry to Canada, became Ugh. Mystery of Ugh /Yossef solved! However, once here, they decided they wanted to be buri ed in Palestine as you are probably already aware. Once in Palestine th ey decided after a few years to return to family here and brought earth fr om Palestine for their burial. By the by, It was, according to Lois, Harr is Pearson, Hymie's father who brought my grandmother Rachel and her paren ts Faigi and Yossef to Canada. He had the means. On another note, I mail ed to you a piece of info on beta thalassemia from the Medical Post. Ho pe your holidays were good.
      Be well. Maxine

      Larry, what got me started in all this is something which may interest y ou as a physician. My family is one of the very few Ashkenazic famili es who carry the Beta-Thalassemia genetic trait. On top of that, we car ry a novel mutation of the trait which is unique to our family. My geneal ogical research has provided the scientists with the most generations ev er in the study of this BT trait in a clean gene pool.... now back to 178 5.
