    • West Palm Beach, FL, Formerly of Harrison - Harold Peter Stern, business executive, Chairman of the Westchester County Police Board of Commissioners, Colonel of the New York State Guard, and New York State Republican Committeeman dies at 94. On January 18, 2018, Harold P. Stern of IBIS, West Palm Beach, passed away, succumbing to complications from an influenza infection. He died with the same fighting spirit, determination and dignity with which he lived his long and eventful life. Born in Frankfurt Germany in 1923, attending school in Germany and Switzerland he grew up under the shadow of the rising NAZI regime. His family was forced to flee Germany in the late 1930s and emigrated to the United States with the assistance of Straus family relatives already established in America. The Stern family settled in New Rochelle, NY where he studied at New Rochelle High School and went on to Columbia University. As a young man, he was a Hemingway-esque sportsman- an avid hunter, fisherman, skier, equestrian, and traveler-- with a love for exploration and a lifelong penchant for trying bizarre and exotic foods. His love of travel drew him to post-World War II Europe where he found opportunity amongst the ruins and reconstruction. He developed a thriving import business ultimately focusing on cork products for construction, insulation, industrial and decorative purposes. He maintained some of these business relationships and activities well into his 90s. In 1956, with great panache he wooed and married the love of his life, Annette Stern. They travelled the world together and raised three boys: Steven, Robert and Eric. They lived in Westchester, NY where he was very active in local, county and state Republican politics and assumed a leadership role in overseeing the Westchester County Police, where he served for 15 years as a member and then Chairman of the Board of Commissioners. He served in advisory capacities at various levels of government including an appointment with the Federal Small Business Administration. Ready for warmer climes, Harold and Annette moved to South Florida in the mid 1990s and settled in the IBIS Country Club community, where he Chaired the Security Committee and was active in local Republican politics. Enthusiastic boaters, they joined the Old Port Cove Yacht Club where they made many wonderful and lasting friends. Over a life spanning more than nine decades, Harold Stern lived a life full of love, adventure, public engagement and service. He will be missed.

He is survived by his sister Irene, his sons Steven and Eric, their wives Lee Ann and Cecilia, and four beloved grandchildren Adam, Josh, Elliott and Jacob.
