Notes |
- Tavies Gaczkowski was born in Bialystok Poland in Jan 1844. Hinke was born in Bialystok Poland in 1850. They were married in 1865 and had their first son, Myer in 1867 (-1945). Myer was the first to come to the US. He arrived in NYC as Meyer Gaschkovsky on 2 Jan 1888 on the steamship Etruria from Liverpool. The story (from his grandson Irwin) is that he saw the name Phillips on a store front and liked it and adopted it. Tavies (David) and Hinke (Anna) emigrated to the US in 1892. They came to Albany NY and established a Locksmithing business with Abraham (my grandfather). He died in 1910 and Hinke died in 1923. They are buried in Jewish Peoples Cemetery, Albany NY.
