  • Notes
    • STEIN--Claire A., died peacefully at home on May 9. Eight months earlier, she joyfully celebrated her 90th birthday in the presence of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with other family and friends. Born Anita Claire Alpern, she was sometimes known as A-Claire or acorn to her childhood friends. She was the daughter of Milton Alpern and Henrietta Nathanson Alpern, and grew up in Brooklyn. She graduated from James Madison High School and Adelphi College, but of all her educational experience she valued most her primary school years at Ethical Culture School in Brooklyn. While in college, her sorority sister and best friend, Lucille Stein, introduced Claire to Lucille's brother Howard. Claire and Howard were married less than a year later, and remained the loves of each other's lives for 63 years, until Howard's death in 2006. They were separated from one another only during World War II, when Howard served in the army in Europe, while Claire stayed on the home front, pregnant with their first child, Brad. As a young wife and mother, Claire studied sculpture with Robert Cronbach and at the Art Students' League. She was a sculptor working in wood carving, plaster modeling for casting, and ultimately, direct metal welding. She was proud to have been praised by a plumber for the quality of her "bead" or weld joint. From 1967 to 1987 she was Executive Director of the National Sculpture Society. She learned the art of making hooked rugs, and enjoyed making pictorial rugs that touched on aspects of family life, notably including the family country home at Copake, New York. For all her interest in art and all her artist friends, her family was always the most important to her. She was a great listener and reader. She rejoiced at the arrival of grandchildren and then great-grandchildren, and loved looking for birthday presents for them all. Her sister Marilyn Alpern Gorlin and brother Buddy Alpern pre-deceased her. She is survived by her brother Nubby Alpern, her sisters-in-law Lucille Stein Kantor and Mildred Alpern, her son Bradford Stein and daughter-in-law Mary Grace Stein, and her daughter Wendy A. Stein and son-in-law Bart Friedman. She is also survived by grandchildren, Elizabeth Ruark, Zachary Stein, Alexander Stein, Benjamin Alpern Friedman and Jacob Stein Friedman, as well as great-grandchildren Isabel Stein, Siena Ruark, Thalia Ruark and Henry Stein.
