Radio Sportscaster. His first job as a sports announcer came in 1925 when he was hired to cover football games over WHAM in Rochester, New York. In 1937 Stern signed with NBC to broadcast Friday night boxing on radio. He would also do radio broadcasts of college football and baseball games through the years. Stern was best known as the host of both "The Bill Stern Sports Review" and the "Colgate Sports Newsreel", which ran on the radio from 1937 to 1956. His theatrical and vaudeville experience carried over into his broadcasting as he would add dramatic flair to each of his broadcasts. Stern's telling of sports legends and strange occurrences kept listeners anxiously waiting for the climax. His famous radio show theme was "Bill Stern the Colgate shave cream man is on the air; Bill Stern the Colgate shave cream man with stories rare." He also broadcast the first televised sports event, the second game of a baseball doubleheader between Princeton and Columbia Universities on May 17, 1939. Stern appeared as himself in the movies "The Pride of the Yankees" with Gary Cooper and "Here Come the Co-eds" with Abbott and Costello. During the 1950s he was a panelist on the television game show "The Name's The Same". After leaving television broadcasting in 1956, Stern went back to radio where he would do some sports commentaries for Mutual Broadcasting Network. (bio by: Mr. Badger Hawkeye)
