  • Notes
    • Dr. Bernice S Stark, 84, Professor Emerita at Point Park College, passed away Saturday, March 25, 2000, at Friendship Village in Upper St. Clair. She had been a Mt. Lebanon resident for 52 years. Dr. Stark earned her AB at Barnard College and her MA at Columbia University. She completed her Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh in 1971. Dr. Stark joined the Point Park faculty in 1964 and gave 22 years of service and scholarship, rising to the position of professor and chairman of the Department of Modern Languages. Dr. Stark's passion for Latin American culture and language predated her tenure at Point Park. She wrote two children's novels, "Chancho: A Boy and His Pig in Peru" and "Adventures in Peru," published by Julian Messner (Scribners) in the 1940s, and went on to publish several short stories for children in the 1950s. Dr. Stark was born Oct. 3, 1915, in Yonkers, N.Y., a daughter of Margaret Morrison Sutherland and Herbert Irving Sutherland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Louis M Stark; and a son, David Sutherland Stark. She is survived by two sons, Donald Morrison Stark and his wife, Nancy Tuttle, of Teaneck, N.J., and William Seckel Stark and his wife, Sharon Nolte Stark, of St. Louis, Mo.; four grandchildren, Tahiti Starship, Matthew Stark, Daniel Stark and Navarro Stark; and a sister, Ruth Filkins. A memorial service was held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Mt. Lebanon on Saturday, March 25. Honoring Dr. Stark's lifelong love of literature and dedication to the humanities, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Andrew Carnegie Free Library, Beechwood Avenue, Carnegie, PA
