Notes |
- Caralinda (Linda) Oken, died October 14, 2014. Her loss is mourned deeply by her husband Don, her children Todd (Dorothy) and Emily (Chinweike Ukomadu) and their children, by brothers Michael and Jonathan (aka Pinchas Osher), and shared by many other family and countless friends and acquaintances. Born March 1, 1943, she graduated from Goddard College and briefly served as an elementary teacher in rural Vermont. Deeply devoted to woman's health and welfare, she later obtained a Master's Degree from Syracuse University and worked in the Sex Education Department at Planned Parenthood in Syracuse for many years. Always inquisitive, self-motivated and creative, when personal computers began to appear, she returned to school to study computer science, thereafter becoming a sought-after computer consultant and teacher for individuals, businesses and corporations, both on her own and as a staff member of Rockey & Associates. In addition to people, she loved travel in general and very particularly to France, which she visited many times. A double breast cancer survivor, she spent much time and effort volunteering and helping others with that condition, including putting her expert knitting skills to work designing and creating hats for those in chemotherapy. In retirement at the Quadrangle in Haverford, her enthusiasm, affection and respect for others, energy, good humor and keen intelligence led her to take on a variety of helpful jobs that were keenly appreciated by the community. She was much and widely loved, and deservedly so. Contributions in her memory can be made to Living Beyond Breast Cancer or Planned Parenthood of America. A celebration of her life will be held at the Quadrangle on December 20th.
