Notes |
- Hank R. Bernstein, 62, died peacefully at home on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, after many years of multiple medical problems. During all his years, he thought first about others, especially his family and close friends. His sensitivity, keen intellect, humor, and compassion will be dearly missed by all who knew him, and those he helped in so many ways by giving his time, wise counsel, and concern.
Born in Long Branch, NJ, and raised near Fort Monmouth, Hank resided in Trenton for the past 19 years.
He was the son of the late Barry and Natalie Bernstein. Hank is survived by his loving wife, Roxanne; beloved daughter, Natalie; sister, Carol Lovett; nephew, Michael Lovett of Wilmington, DE; niece, Lauren Lovett of Los Angeles, CA, and cousins, Harry Tucker and Michael Tucker of New York.
A man of many talents and wide interests, Hank graduated from SUNY Fredonia and Emory University School of Law. He moved with his wife, also an attorney, to Wilmington, DE, in 1976, where he served as managing director of the Senior Citizen's Legal Assistance Program of the Legal Aid Society, and later opened his law practice.
Following a back injury and surgery, Hank went on to earn a LLM in taxation from Temple University, and served as deputy treasurer for the State of Delaware. In 1988, he and his wife moved to the Trenton area, where he found his true calling as a devoted father to Natalie, creating a challenging and creative home full of music, poetry, great cooking, and love. He fostered and guided Natalie's musical gift for piano.
Hank was an editor and contributor for a book of poetry published by the Delaware Valley Poet's Society, and a pastel artist. In his latter years, he returned to one of his early pursuits and talents as a teacher, earning a teaching certificate from Rider University. He was a member of Har Sinai Temple, and sang as a tenor in the choir.
Funeral services are Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 10 a.m. at Har Sinai Temple, 2421 Pennington Rd., Pennington, NJ. Burial will follow at the Baum Cemetery in West Haverstraw, NY.
