  Lisl Bermann 1915-2015 ALMOST 100, ALMOST FAMOUS Lisl Kahn Bermann lived a long and colorful life until she passed away quietly yesterday, April 19, 2015 at the remarkable age of 99. She was almost 100 and she was almost famous. She will not be remembered for the offices she attained, the positions that she held, nor the people that knew her. On the other hand, she will be remembered for the more important things such as being loved by her family, thoughtfulness to others, and a sparkling personality. Lisl was a very special woman, who had a chance to live three lives in one lifetime; one as a young lady growing up in pre war Germany, one as the devoted wife of the Houston iconic restaurateur Camille Bermann of Maxims, and lastly as the strong independent matriarch of the local Kahn/Bermann family. Each represented lengthy periods of time, which allowed her to develop her great personality and character. Born in Germany on May 26th, 1915, Lisl grew up in a family of 8 children. Her parents, Max and Rosa Kahn, were thoughtful loving parents, who made sure all the children had a great education and learned a distinct profession to follow. Lisl chose the route of education and athletics for her future. She was an excellent student and model of health, often training for hours in sporting and cycling events. This boundless energy would serve her well into her later life and a good reason for her healthy longevity. With World War II imminent, her parents wisely decided to send her to the United States in 1937. She displayed incredible courage as a young adult coming to America by herself to escape the terror in Germany. That year, Lisl met and eventually married Camille Bermann from Luxembourg in New York City. She helped support them, as he trained to become a restaurateur waiting tables in the Pavilion Restaurant at the French Pavilion at the 1939 World's Fair in New York. From there, they moved to New Orleans to further his career, working as the Maître 'd for Carlos Marcello at the prestigious Beverly Club. When gambling and fine dining closed at the Club, they moved west settling in Houston in 1948, where Camille opened the premier restaurant known as Maxims. Lisl backed Camille completely, helping prepare the famous deserts the restaurant featured and at the same time raising two sons. They were happily and successfully married for over 50 years, until Camille's death in 1991. The last chapter in Lisl's life actually began with Camille's passing. Lisl became her own woman, no longer living in the shadow of a famous man. She traveled extensively by herself, enjoying the beauty of life as she went. She became an avid photographer and received recognition for her many wild life pictures. Additionally, she had an eye for beautiful works of art and a excellent palate for fine dining and great wines. Her enthusiasm for the pleasures of the table, encouraged her to set up a large endowment for scholarships at the University of Houston Hilton College for Hotel and Restaurant Management. Her children, grandchildren, and great grand children became an ever increasing part of her life. She supported their many endeavors, always encouraging them to pursue their dreams to the fullest. Lisl will be deeply missed by her two sons, Mark and Ronnie, her grandchildren, Ron, Camille, Danielle (and her husband Chip) and finally her two great grandchildren, Olivia and Grady. At the amazing age of 99, Lisl has outlived most of her relatives, but does leave many adoring nieces and nephews and friends that worship her.
