Nate Salsbury Obituary
Nate "the great" Salsbury, 90, passed from this earth on November 17, 2015 at home. Born and raised in New York City, Nate graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in electrical engineering and served as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
He pursued and finally won over the love of his life, Winifred, and married at age twenty. This awesome team produced four bouncing post-war babies and raised them in the fashion of Ozzie and Harriet.
After practicing as an engineer for half a decade, he went off to seek his fortune by starting his own manufacturer's representative company which prospered by his tenacious work. Instead of mowing the lawn, he spent his weekends sailing the Long Island Sound.
Nate and Freddie retired to New Bern, North Carolina in 1973 and he became a weaver. Having no bridge clubs at the time, they learned to square dance and Nate enjoyed doing the "calling." In the late '70s, Nate learned he could do his weaving patterns on a personal computer. He taught himself programming and this became his passion. He became New ern's first professional programmer, offering services to businesses in the community.
In the mid '90's Nate joined The Southern Gentlemen Barbershop Chorus and volunteered many hours singing his heart out. He spent time with his darling grandchild, Chelsea, who moved to New Bern with her mother to be close to them.
He was well known for his jokes and good humor - always the salesman. He volunteered with the Literacy Council, hospice and served as treasurer for the Hearing Loss Association.
After Freddie passed, Nate adopted the second love of his life \endash a dog named Lyda.
Nate was proud to be the grandson of Nate Salsbury, part-owner and Manager of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. He adored his aunt Rebecca Salsbury James who became a prominent New Mexican artist.
He is survived by his four children J. William and wife JoAnn, Peter and his husband Steven Shiflett, Arthur, Ellen, grandchild Chelsea, and niece Ardythe Fulcher and husband Frank.
No services are planned. Please make contributions to Colonial Capital Humane Society or The Southern Gentlemen Barbershop Chorus -
