  • Notes
    • Leona Corsack Samfield, the loving wife of the late Edwin Samfield for 54 years, went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, November 15, 2011, after a short illness. She was 89 years old.
She was predeceased by her parents, Sam and Mary Corsack, and her husband. Born on March 5, 1922, in Cleveland, Ohio, Leona was very proud of her native state of Ohio. After graduating from high school, Leona worked as a secretary at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in Cleveland where she met her husband. She also lived in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Avon, Connecticut, before moving to Houston, Texas, in 1963. Her husband's employment at NASA brought Leona and her family to Houston during the heyday of the space program. They lived in the Clear Lake-NASA area, then near Rice University in Houston and finally in The Woodlands.
Besides being a devoted wife and mother, she was an accomplished artist, having won several awards in juried art shows and having her artwork shown in fine arts museums in Houston, Texas and Cleveland, Ohio. Leona loved art, reading books of all kinds, and watching old classic movies on television.
Leona was a devout Catholic and was a lover of all animals, especially cats and dogs. Leona supported groups such as the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. She and her husband also were longtime supporters of the University of St. Thomas in Houston.
Leona, who also went by the name of Lee, loved her family and many friends. She is survived by her son, Jeff, and his wife, Janie; two grandsons, Jason and Jordan; two step-grandsons, Kelly and Kyle Burson and their families.
