Kitzes became first Hispanic woman in Senate The Associated Press Consuelo Kitzes the first Hispanic woman to serve in the New Mexico Senate and the sister of a former state representative died Monday She was 70 Kitzes died from cancer at an Albuquerque nursing home said her brother former Rep Roman Jaramillo Jr of Santa Fe A Mass is scheduled for 10 today at St Francis Cathedral in Santa Fe Kitzes was appointed to the Senate in 1972 by Bruce King after she defeat ed the Santa Fe incumbent Edmundo Delgado in the Democratic primary election that Delgado resigned from the Senate after his defeat to take a position with the New Mexico Bicentennial Com mission Kitzes was elected in the 1972 general election Kitzes whose maiden name was Jaramillo married Mark Burrell and used his last name in 1975 until she was defeated in the 1976 Democratic prima ry by Kings brother Don King who was subsequently elected to the Senate She later moved to Albuquerque During her tenure in the Senate Kitzes served on the Conservation Public Affairs and Rules committees She also served on the inter im Health and Aging Study and University Study commit tees according to Legislative Council Service records Roman Jaramillo Jr was a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives from 1947 to 1952 represent ing Rio Arriba County from his home at the time in El Rito Kitzes was the third woman to serve in the Senate Louise Coe a Carrizozo Democrat was a senator from 1925 to 1940 Edith Vesely a Silver City Democrat served from 1965 to 1970.
