Notes |
- Jenny Manasse Stein, 97, of Media, a refugee from Nazi Germany who operated a poultry farm in Vineland, N.J., with her husband for 20 years, died Sept. 25 at Bryn Mawr Hospital.
Mrs. Stein left Germany in 1936 and joined two siblings in New York City. In 1942 she married Siegfried Stein, who had fled the Nazis the year before. She did custom embroidery for the Bergdorf Goodman department store and he worked for a textile manufacturer in New York for several years. They then joined other Jewish refugees who were raising chickens in New Jersey. Their son Ed said that his parents had no agricultural experience, but that owning a chicken farm was a way for them to have their own business.
Mrs. Stein and her husband retired to Miami Beach, Fla., in the 1960s. He died in 1978. She moved to Martins Run, a retirement community in Media, in 1994, to be close to family and old friends.
She enjoyed needlepoint and playing canasta until her eyesight failed, her son said, and participated in the social activities at Martins Run.
The funeral and burial were in Florida.
