  Theda Ostrander Henle, 87, a civic leader who was president of the Arlington League of Women Voters from 1956 to 1958 and was active in the Arlington Democratic Party for decades, died April 1 at Prince George's Community Hospital after a heart attack. Mrs. Henle lived in Arlington from 1949 until 2003, when she moved to Collington Episcopal Life Care Community in Mitchellville. Her role with the League of Women Voters coincided with the commonwealth's struggle to implement the U.S. Supreme Court's 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision that outlawed racial segregation in public schools. She helped found the Arlington Committee to Preserve Public Schools, a citizens group that defied state efforts to close integrated schools. Her home overlooked Arlington's Stratford Junior High, which in 1959 became the first Virginia school to integrate. She opened her home to the parents of the four black students who enrolled at Stratford so they could be near their children. The day passed without incident. In the early 1960s, she was research chairman for Democrat Augustus C. Johnson's unsuccessful bids for Congress. In the 1970s, she was a legislative aide in Richmond for then-Del. Mary A. Marshall (D-Arlington). Mrs. Henle was born in San Francisco and raised in San Diego. She was a 1940 honors graduate of Swarthmore College. She wrote a political novel, "Death Files for Congress," that was published in 1971. Her short story "A Harmless Vanity," originally printed in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, was made into a BBC television story for the series "Tales of the Unexpected." She also wrote plays, some of which were read and staged in the Washington area. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Peter Henle of Mitchellville; three sons, Michael Henle of Oberlin, Ohio, James Henle of Northampton, Mass., and Paul Henle of Concord, N.H..; four grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. ----------------------------------- Father:«tab»Frank S Ostrander Mother:«tab»Katherine Burnham
