    • MARK VANN, 39, BANJO PLAYER FOR GROUP LEFTOVER SALMON
Colorado's music community is mourning the loss of Mark Vann. The affable 39-year-old banjoist and co-founder of Boulder-based Leftover Salmon died Monday at his home. He had been diagnosed in October with melanoma, a form of skin cancer.

''Mark Vann was a wonderful guy and a brilliant musician. He took the banjo to a new level,'' said Chuck Morris, vice president of Clear Channel Entertainment in Denver. Morris was Leftover Salmon's manager for five years.

Craig Ferguson, director and owner of the annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival, called Vann ''the best rock 'n' roll banjo player ever. He was a kind, mild-mannered guy who really appreciated music.''

Vann started playing banjo as a teen-ager in Virginia. Leftover Salmon was formed 12 years ago in Boulder when Vince Herman of the Cajun-influenced Salmonheads joined up with Drew Emmitt and Vann of the progressive bluegrass Left Hand String Band. Vann twice won the banjo competition at Telluride.

Through relentless touring, the band earned a national audience for its free-form, self-described ''polyethnic Cajun slamgrass'' music.

One of the best examples of Vann's fusion style can be heard on the song Funky Mountain Fogdown on the 1997 CD Euphoria (Hollywood). On Leftover Salmon's The Nashville Sessions (Hollywood), Vann jammed with diverse musicians including Blues Traveler's John Popper, Sam Bush, bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs and the late Waylon Jennings.

''He was a great banjo player and a great musician. He could play (Earl) Scruggs-style bluegrass banjo, but he was his own player. He had his own style,'' said Grammy-winning mandolinist Sam Bush.

''He had that drive and intensity you can't teach. He was also one of the fastest pickers I ever tried to keep up with.''

In a series of local benefit concerts in November, Leftover Salmon was joined by a host of musical luminaries, including Todd Park Mohr, banjoists Bela Fleck and Pete Wernick and members of Colorado's other jamgrass bands: String Cheese Incident and the Yonder Mountain String Band.

Private services will be held this week. A memorial concert is being planned for the spring. Vann is survived by his wife, Jennifer Vann, of Boulder. A fund has been established to help pay Vann's medical expenses.
